15 THE DEMONSTRATION

Gurukul:

It was an unusual day at the Gurukul. As the array of foot soldiers carrying sonic guns entered the school, students and Gurus lined up to see the parade, some excited, some shocked and afraid. The huge demonstration hall, situated on the side of practice ground with strong black stone walls and tin shade, was opened after almost a year. It was illuminated with prominent alumni and Gurus; the smell of burnt gunpowder engulfed it from all corners.

Major Singh was leading the convoy, riding on his decorated horse with a long steel sword and a small pistol hanging from his waist in their respective sheaths. Krishan accompanied him on his horse, followed by a series of hundred foot-soldiers walking systematically in twos. The major attention grabber was the sonic blaster gun that one of the foot soldiers was carrying. Hundreds of widened eyes and opened mouths were staring at it on the way. For the first time, Major Singh had got a chance to showcase the training he had been giving to the soldiers since his arrival at Gurukul.

With every step the convoy took forward, Guru Drona’s heart pounded faster. Standing at the hall’s gate with Guru Agnivesh, he was witnessing the most fateful and risky moment for the kingdom’s future. His broad shoulders looked insufficient to hold the kingdom’s pride if things go wrong. He was standing on the edge where it was the orchard of the kingdom’s prosperity on one side and the ditch of apocalypse on the other. Maybe the reason to go ahead with this program: to make our fighters aware of modern weapons and technologies, was too strong to abort it. Guru Valmiki was absent to show his silent protest; Drona would have felt more confident and strengthened with him on his side .

Major Singh signaled the troop to stop as it reached the main gate of the hall. Moving ahead, Singh greeted Drona with a proud smile boasting his army and its weapons.

Drona looked into his eyes, smiled and joined his palms politely. All went inside the hall… followed by the alumni, battalion heads and other prominent warriors and scholars.

“Guru Drona looked a bit terrified, didn’t he?” Partha said to Ani and Pawan. They had finally reached to the front of the crowd and were now moving towards the hall with others.

“No way, he’s the mightiest warrior in the universe,” Pawan responded with great confidence and proud on his face.

“So?” asked Ani.

“No warrior or army in the universe stands a chance against him. Why would he be afraid?”

Ani stopped, followed by Partha and Pawan. The crowd pushed them a bit and then continue to flow like the river around the rock. “Then why have they kept this kingdom hidden for thousands of years?” He asked looking towards Pawan.

“Who knows!”

“One backstabber is enough to end the saga of a Maharathi. We have invited a hundred of them.” Ani said and turned back to join the crowd towards the hall. Pawan and Partha stood there for a fraction of moment, stunned, and started walking again.
